SmartSwitch was established in 2006 with the exclusive right to deploy the Smartcards UEPS (Universal Electronic Payment System) based on the Net1 patented FTS (Funds Transfer System) into the Botswana market. The UEPS is an alternative payment system developed for the unbanked and under-banked populations of developing economies and is the first system of its kind that can enable the estimated 4 billion people worldwide, who generally have limited or no access to a bank account, to enter affordably into electronic transactions with each other, government agencies, employers, merchants and other financial service providers. The UEPS has been embraced and approved by the central banks of countries such as Namibia, Ghana and South Africa as an accredited national payment system.

Smart Switch Botswana is an accredited electronic payments service provider in Botswana. We provide technology which utilizes a financial “switch”, smart cards and a network of point-of-sale devices at merchants to take financial services and banking to the people of Botswana. We offer our service and payment platform to banks to enable them to take banking to all areas in Botswana – something which has proved challenging to the banks in the past. Whether it is a fully fledged off-line banking solution, wage payment solution, money transfer or cash advance solution you are looking for, we can deliver.

To achieve access to financial services for all, throughout Botswana by encouraging banks and other institutions to reach out to where the people are. Our technology and capability will bridge the gap between institutions and the unbanked population providing payment solutions. Approximately 60% of the population in Botswana remain unbanked. Our mission is to change this. And we are doing so – STEP BY STEP!

To have a number of banks using our extensive network and capable technology to reach out to the entire country so that it will be everybody’s desire to possess and use a smart card due to the low charges, the incredible reach of the network, the ease of use and convenience of the system by 2024. People who have not previously been able to securely hold their money whilst earning interest will be able to do so, savings will be encouraged. The Electronic Food Coupon System – an African Success Story

When the Ministry of Local Government issued out a tender in 2007 calling for a paper-based food coupon system which would be used to replace the existing defective food basket system no-one could have predicted that an electronic food coupon system would be implemented which would revolutionize the way in which more than 60 000 social grant beneficiaries would receive a monthly food grant, providing the country with a practical example of how technology can be harnessed to greatly improve service delivery and to provide choice and restore dignity to so many people.
