The SmartSwitch Electronic Food Coupon System involves the provision of biometrically secure Smartcards to social grant beneficiaries who are then paid each month onto their card via our financial switch.

The SmartCards are embedded with a microchip which contains personal information about the beneficiary as well as a record of their fingerprints for biometric security. These details are written to the card by a Council Officer at the time of enrolling the beneficiary. During the enrolment process, the Council Officer is required to present their fingerprint on the system, thereby providing an audit trail of who enrolled that particular beneficiary and when. Any changes that are made to those beneficiary’s details also require the provision of a fingerprint by the Council Officer.
